Computer’s Freezing

My laptop keep freezing and sometimes it won’t start, what can I do?

There can be many reasons why a PC freezes, and there’s also a couple types of freezes. I’m assuming you have hard-lock freezes as you say you can’t turn your laptop on sometimes. What you’ve described is usually indicative of some type of hardware failure & there really is no tech that would be able to repair that for you that wouldn’t run in the $200-400 range after parts/labor. I’m assuming the PC is over 5yrs old (is usually when this happens), is better & cheaper for you to just buy a new PC at this point. If the PC is newer than that, give us a call and we can have a technician take a look and see what software could be causing the problem!

Deleting Temp Files

Is deleting temp files, add-ons, etc. the same as cleaning the disk? Also when I click on an icon it is slow to react?

Similar, but not the same. Deleting temporary files is best left to a program that is meant for doing that, such as CCleaner or windows Disk Cleanup.

Removing addons can be done through each individual browser, which will speed up browsing and load time of the browser.

If you have a lot of icons on the desktop and its slow to react, you may want to try removing some of the excess/unneeded icons that are listed there. This can help speed up the displaying of the desktop as well.

Speed Up Your PC – Help for Slow Computers

I am losing my internet connection, especially when I download pc speedup programs, and they keep telling me that I have registry errors. What pc speed up should I use for my slow computer?

Technician Response:

The real answer to your question is that none of them are the “one” to use. PC Speed Up programs, more often than not, actually end up slowing down your computer even more. They’ll tell you that you have all sorts of registry issues, driver issues and other problems, when the typical problem with slow computers is that they just have too much running (including those PC Boost programs). To truly speed up your computer, I would recommend going through your Programs List in your Control Panel and removing all the software you do not need (be careful to leave any drivers installed). Restart the computer and check to see what you have starting in your system tray next to the clock. Don’t need the program? Uninstall it. Does it need to start when Windows starts? If not, remove it from start-up. Take a look at the age of your computer as well. Most of the anti-virus software out today are not really meant to run on slower, older computers. Finding the right fit for your computer can be overwhelming. I would suggest purchasing a subscription plan through My Computer Works or a One-Time Tune-up that we offer, and have one of our technicians go through the computer with you; removing all the applications you really don’t need, going through your start-up entries, finding the right fit of protection for your computer and any other recommendation the technician will see that will help your computer perform better.

Security Shield Virus Removal

Security Shield Virus Removal

My main computer has a virus called My Security Shield. Can it be removed??

My Security Shield Virus is a rogue anti-spyware program from the same family as Virus Doctor. This infection is promoted through websites that show advertisements that pretend to be online anti-malware scanners. These scanners will then pretend to scan your computer, and when finished, will state that your computer is infected and that you need to download and install My Security Shield to protect yourself. The truth is that these online scanners are all fake and are only an advertisement. They have no way of knowing what is running on your computer. My Security Shield is a scam and was only created to trick you into purchasing it. You should not purchase it, and if you have, you should contact your credit card company and dispute the charge. It can be removed, and we recommend having a professional do it (either a computer shop or a remote service like ours). We are able to remove this infection. We have one-time service subscriptions as well as yearly subscriptions. There are also online guides to removing this infection but we do not recommend using them unless you have experience in virus removal as they have a tendency to reinfect if not removed completely.

Palladium Pro is a rogue anti-spyware program from the Fake Microsoft Security Essentials family of infections. When this infection is installed on your computer it will display a fake Microsoft Security Essentials alert that states that it has detected an “Unknown Win32/Trojan” on your computer. It will then prompt you to scan your computer, which will start a fake scan of your computer that ultimately states that a file is infected with “Trojan.Horse.Win32.PAV.64.a”. It is generally something you will not be able to remove without specialized tools and knowledge of the infection. There are guides online but they sometimes don’t remove all of the infection when followed. It is our recommendation to have a professional clean the PC to ensure it is completely done and done correctly.
