TurboTax Home & Office will not install on my PC. It says there is a problem with the Windows Installer?

Question:

TurboTax Home & Office will not install on my PC. It says there is a problem with the Windows Installer. I have worked extensively with TurboTax support, but they determined that it was a problem with my PC and were not able to assist. Can you help me?

Answer:

Of course we can! This is a problem with Windows, but the good news is that in most cases the Windows Installer can be repaired. However, it is also likely that you do not have the latest version of it, so the best course of action is to just install a new copy.

Assuming that there is nothing else wrong with the computer, reinstalling the Windows Installer will correct the problem. Here is the link to the Microsoft downloads section- you’ll need one of the following files according to your operating system (see this post to determine which operating system you have):

If you have Windows XP (32-bit edition), you will need to download and install this file from the list:

WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe

For Windows XP (64-bit edition), you will need to download and install this file:

WindowsServer2003-KB942288-v4-x64.exe

For Windows Vista or Windows 7 (32-bit edition), you will need to download and install this file:

Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu

For Windows Vista or Windows 7 (64-bit edition), you will need to download and install this file:

Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu

Download the file, close all open programs , and then install it (this may require a reboot).

If that doesn’t resolve the problem then the issue is much deeper and you may want to have one of our technicians look at your computer. We should be able to help you fix it remotely.
