There is a new virus that not only seeks to lock your computer, but also demands payment to Unlock your computer.
This type of ransomware has been identified as “Reveton”, a new “drive-by” virus that is affecting more and more consumers and businesses across the nation. What makes this ransomware unique is that it poses to be from the FBI. This is distressing because many people are likely to follow instructions from a government agency if they believe the “notice” to be legitimate. This infection locks up the user’s computer, claiming that the user has violated the law, and requires that a fine be paid to release the lock on the user’s computer. If for any reason you have been infected by the virus (see screenshot below), be sure to follow these steps:
1. DO NOT pay any “fine” demanded by the ransomware
2. Contact My Computer Works at (877)308-6143 to attempt removal of the infection
3. Understand that there is some degree of risk that some of your passwords and/or other information may have been stolen
